Important Events

Delegation Led by Executive Vice President Wang Shoujun Visits Serbia, Slovenia, and Hungary

From October 23 to 312025, Prof. Wang Shoujun, Executive Vice President of Beijing Normal University (BNU), led a delegation to visit Serbia, Slovenia, and Hungary. The delegation visited the Ministry of Education of Serbia, the University of Belgrade (Serbia), the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary) and Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church (Hungary). The delegation also visited the Chinese embassies in Serbia, Slovenia and Hungary and held meetings with representatives of the BNU alumni in Serbia and Hungary. Heads of relevant departments of the university also joined the visits.

In Serbia, when the delegation visited the Chinese Embassy in Serbia, they held discussions focused on promoting joint student training between Chinese and Serbian universities, co-establishing a "Belt and Road" joint laboratory, and conducting language and cultural exchanges. At the University of Belgrade, both sides jointly reviewed the history of cooperation and signed a university-level student exchange agreement. The delegation also visited the Ministry of Education of Serbia, where they held a discussion regarding cooperation in areas including artificial intelligence (AI) education, faculty and student exchange, and joint research projects.

During the delegation's visit to the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, both sides highly praised the collaboration between the two universities and the achievements made thus far, expressing the desire to further broaden the areas of exchange and forge deeper, more pragmatic cooperation.

In Hungary, the delegation visited the Chinese Embassy in Hungary, where they exchanged views on further promoting BNU's educational cooperation with Hungary. During the visit to Eötvös Loránd University, both parties introduced the development of their respective universities. They discussed further academic exchange, cooperative research, and discipline co-development under the framework of the "Belt and Road." The delegation also visited Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church. The two parties engaged in in-depth exchanges regarding the promotion of mutual visits by faculty and students, joint student training, and research cooperation, and signed a university-level macro-cooperation agreement.

During the visits, the delegation also met with and extended greetings to BNU alumni in Serbia and Hungary. They held cordial discussions with the alumni and provided an update on the university's development and recent achievements.

On October 6, 2025, Prof. Kong Ying, Dean of Bay Area International Business School, was invited to visit Singapore Management University for an exchange. Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on promoting collaboration in talent development, academic research, and international exchanges.

Mainland Study Tour by Education Bureau of Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Visit BNU Zhuhai

A delegation of 30 members, led by Mr. Li Dingyuan, Chief Principal of the School Quality Assurance for Schools Division of Education Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, visited BNU Zhuhai. Representatives and staff from Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, Leyu College, and School of Continuing Education and Teacher Training warmly received the delegation.

Opening Ceremony for Mainland Study Tour for Hong Kong Newly-joined Teachers Held at BNU Zhuhai

To support the professional development of newly-joined teachers from Hong Kong, foster a deep sense of national identity, and further strengthen the integrated and innovative development of basic education between Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, the opening ceremony for the Mainland Study Tour for Hong Kong Newly-joined Teachers was held at the BNU Zhuhai on October 15, 2025. The study tour was organized by the Education Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and hosted by BNU Zhuhai. Attending the ceremony were Ms. Zhu Xiaofang, Senior Project Development Consultant, Ms. Mai Jiawen, Senior Professional Development Officer, and Mr. Liu Gencheng, Project Officer, Education Bureau of Hong Kong S.A.R., along with 141 newly-joined primary and secondary school teachers from Hong Kong, as well as leaders and experts from relevant departments of BNU Zhuhai.

Mainland Study Tour for Hong Kong Promoted Teachers Held at BNU Zhuhai

From October 21 to 24, 2025, the Mainland Study Tour for Hong Kong Promoted Teachers, organized by the Education Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and hosted by BNU Zhuhai, conducted a four-day in-depth training session in Zhuhai. Through diverse arrangements such as professional theoretical study, visits to mainland schools, exploration of technology enterprises, and cultural and historical investigations, the program aimed to enhance the educational innovation capabilities of 120 promoted primary and secondary school teachers from Hong Kong and deepen their understanding of national culture.

Symposium on the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area: A Special Session of "the 15th Five-Year Plan"Funding Strategy Research Project for the Discipline of Macro-management and Policy in the Department of Management Science, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Held at BNU Zhuhai

The Symposium on the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a sub-project of the "15th Five-Year Plan" Funding Strategy Research Project for the Discipline of Macromanagement and Policy, was held at BNU Zhuhai. The event was guided by the Department of Management Science of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, hosted by the School of Public Affairs of the University of Science and Technology of China, co-organized by BNU School of Government and the School of National Security and Emergency Management, and supported by the Center for Governmental Management Studies of BNU Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences. Focusing on topics such as the development trend and future direction of the discipline of Macro-management and Policy, and the governance of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the symposium gathered over 80 experts and scholars from various fields of Macro-management and Policy, as well as representatives from nearly 30 universities and research institutions such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), City University of Hong Kong, The University of Macau, and City University of Macau.

1st Greater Bay Area Sports Forum – The 15th National Games and Sports Development in the Greater Bay Area Held at BNU Zhuhai

Supported by the 2025 Guangdong Provincial Exchange Program of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance, the Forum on School Sports Development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area opened on October 25, 2025 in Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai (BNU Zhuhai). It was part of the series of events for the 5th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Student Sports Festival and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Lang Ping Sports Culture and Policy Research Center at Beijing Normal University. Centered on the theme of "Sports Empowering the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area: Model Innovation and Pilot Practices", the forum brought together more than 100 experts and scholars from over 50 universities across the country.

The UNESCO "Intangible Cultural Heritage as Fashion" Capacity-building Project Workshop was Held at BNU Zhuhai

From October 15 to 17, 2025, the third workshop of the "Intangible Cultural Heritage as Fashion (ICH as Fashion)" capacity-building project was held at BNU Zhuhai Campus. The workshop brought together internationally renowned designers and experts and scholars from universities, and selected 22 inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, fashion major students and emerging designers.

Prof. Yuan Li Shared Voices of Chinese Teachers at UNESCO-IBE Centenary Dialogue

On September 3, 2025, the UNESCO International Bureau of Education organized a roundtable discussion titled "The Future of Curriculum in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – An IBE Centenary Dialogue" during UNESCO's Digital Learning Week in Paris. Experts and scholars from various countries and regions around the world gathered to engage in in-depth discussions on artificial intelligence and the transformation of educational curricula. Prof. Yuan Li from the College of Education for the Future of Beijing Normal University was invited to participate and shared her research findings and insights at the roundtable under the theme "Reflections and Implications of Chinese Teachers' Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence."

Symposium on Formation, Dissemination and Reading of World Literature Held at BNU Zhuhai

On the morning of October 21, 2025, the symposium of "World Literature: Formation, Dissemination, and Reading" opened at BNU Zhuhai. More than 30 distinguished scholars from 21 universities, including Harvard University, Beijing Normal University, Tsinghua University, Nankai University, and Shandong University, gathered for a three-day, high-level academic exchange focusing on the emergence and influence of research paradigms in world literature.

Prof. Tony Brown Delivered Lecture on "Art and Technology: A Critical Autobiography of Artistic Experimentation" at Spark Salon

On the afternoon of October 24, 2025, the 3rd Session of the Spark Salon, an English Academic Sharing Salon for faculty, was held. Hosted by International Office, BNU Zhuhai, the event invited Prof. Tony Brown—Distinguished Prof. from BNU School of Future Design and Lifetime Professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris—as the keynote speaker. With the title "Art and Technology: A Critical Autobiography of Artistic Experimentation", he shared over 40 years of his cross-disciplinary practice at the intersection of technology and art with more than 20 Chinese and foreign faculty members from various disciplines across the campus. Through rich case studies, he demonstrated his successful explorations of proactively integrating new technologies into his creations to break the boundaries of traditional art and drive the transformation of artistic creation methods.

Faculty Members of BNU Zhuhai Selected as List of World's Top 2% Scientists

On September 19, 2025 local time, Stanford University and the internationally authoritative academic publisher Elsevier jointly released the 2025 World's Top 2% Scientists list. The list is divided into two main categories: the "Career-long Impact" and the "Single-year Impact". 15 faculty members of Faculty of Arts and Sciences were selected in the list, an increase of nine from last year. Jia Weijia, Wang Tian, and Luo Zongwei from Artificial Intelligence and Future Network Research Institute have been concurrently included in both the "Career-long Impact" and the "Single-year Impact" for multiple consecutive years.

Distinguished Prof. Tim Yip Awarded Sixth Beijing "Jinghua Award" for Overseas Chinese

The award ceremony for the Sixth Beijing "Jinghua Award" for Overseas Chinese was held in Beijing. BNU School of Future Design Distinguished Professor Mr. Tim Yip was awarded as one of the 10 outstanding individuals.

SFD Wins Three Red Dot Design Awards

Recently, the winners of the 2025 "Red Dot Award: Design Concept", one of the most influential honors in the global design community, were announced at an award ceremony held in Singapore. Lu Di, from the School of Future Design (SFD) at BNU, received the Red Dot: Best of the Best Award for the design "Tray Coffee Table". His works "Tray Piggy Bank" and "Spice Grinder" also won Red Dot Awards in the Winner category.

Official Website of BRS Included in Belt and Road Portal

Recently, BNU Belt and Road School (BRS) was invited to become the first higher education institution officially linked on Belt and Road Portal (www.yidaiyilu.gov.cn). Belt and Road Portal is the official website for advancing the Belt and Road Initiative, jointly guided by the National Development and Reform Commission and Xinhua News Agency, and co-hosted by Xinhua's China Economic Information Service and State Information Center. This cloud-based "link" between a "national-level media outlets and think tank from universities" signifies renewed societal recognition for Beijing Normal University's longstanding efforts in supporting the high-quality joint development of the Belt and Road Initiative.

BRS Selected as "2025 AMI Think Tank Inclusion Institution" in Chinese Comprehensive Think Tanks Evaluation

The 8th Summit Forum on Think Tank Construction and Evaluation in China was held in Beijing, hosted by the Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Evaluation Studies. Representatives from think tank management and development organizations across multiple provinces and cities, along with relevant experts and scholars, attended the event. The forum focused on thematic discussions regarding the development of distinctive think tank brands and practical experiences.

The results of the 2025 Chinese Comprehensive Think Tanks Evaluation Research Project were announced at the forum. BNU Belt and Road School was selected as an Included Institution and its submitted research achievement—the book series High-Quality Joint Construction of the "Belt and Road"—was named a reference case for the 10-Year Review of the Construction of New-Type Think Tanks with Chinese Characteristics.

Dr. Tsung-han Weng's research team from BNU College of Education for the Future has published their latest research findings in TESOL Quarterly, a top-tier international journal in applied linguistics and English education. Titled "Dancing with Shackles: Exploring two Chinese high school teachers' restricted agency in implementing core competencies from an ecological lens", the study delves into the practical challenges and proactive responses faced by high school English teachers in implementing the core competencies framework under Chinese new curriculum reform.

A research paper titled "Weighted residual empirical processes, martingale transformations, and model specification tests for regressions with a diverging number of parameters," co-authored by Prof. Zhu Lixing (corresponding author) from Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Prof. Guo Xu from the School of Statistics at BNU, and Prof. Tan Falong from College of Finance and Statistics at Hunan University, has been published online in the Journal of Econometrics, a leading journal in the field of econometrics.

2024 Global Natural Disaster Assessment Report, Co-compiled by BNU School of National Safety and Emergency Management, Officially Released

On October 13, 2025, the 2024 Global Natural Disaster Assessment Report (Chinese and English versions) was officially released. The report was jointly compiled by multiple organizations, including BNU Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management-Ministry of Emergency Management & Ministry of Education, BNU School of National Safety and Emergency Management, BNU Ministry of Emergency Management-National Disaster Reduction Center of China, China Association for Disaster Prevention, and the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) program.

Associate Prof. Liu Bin's Co-authored Research Published in Environmental Science & Technology

Associate Prof. Liu Bin from the Emerging Contaminants Research Center of BNU School of Technology for Sustainability, in collaboration with Professor Heng Liang from Harbin Institute of Technology, Dr. Zhe Yang from the University of Queensland, Dr. Lin Deng from Hunan University, Dr. Xuewu Zhu from Shandong Jianzhu University, and others, have published a series of papers focusing on tribochemistry and membrane separation systems for the control of emerging aquatic contaminants.

BNU Research Team Contributes BNU Power to Global Environmental Governance

Facing the urgent challenge of global climate change and ecological environment governance, BNU research team published a study in Nature Communications in January 2025, revealing how short-term warming promotes stable carbon sequestration in agricultural wastelands. This finding not only provides a scientific basis for the green and sustainable development of agriculture but also offers new insights for addressing global climate change. Composed of experts and scholars such as Prof. Xia Xinghui, Academician Yu Gang, Prof. Sun Ke, Prof. Zhang Lixiao, Prof. Zhang Chengdong, and Prof. Ao Zhimin, this innovative research group on "Synergizing the Reduction of Pollution and Carbon Emissions in China's Watersheds" is contributing Chinese solutions to tackling this complex issue.

Students from Huitong College Publish Paper in Remote Sensing

Students from BNU Huitong College have published a paper titled “Swin-GAT Fusion Dual-Stream Hybrid Network for High-Resolution Remote Sensing Road Extraction”in Remote Sensing. Zhang Hongkai and Yuan Hongxuan, 2022 undergraduate students majoring in Big Data Technology from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Huitong College, are the co-first authors of the paper. Shao Minghao, a 2022 undergraduate student majoring in Artificial Intelligence, is the second author, and Wang Junxin, a 2021 undergraduate student majoring in Big Data Technology, is the third author. Professor Liu Suhong from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences serves as the corresponding author. This research was supported by the Major Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Zhu Xingjiang's Research Team from the Department of Physics of Faculty of Arts and Sciences Publishes Paper in Astronomy & Astrophysics

A research team led by research fellow Zhu Xingjiang from the Department of Physics of Faculty of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with domestic and international teams, including the Paduan Astronomical Observatory of the Italian Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), Yunnan Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, and Kyoto University, two research papers on Ibn-type supernovae titled“Massive stars exploding in a He-rich circumstellar medium. X. Flash spectral features in the Type Ibn SN 2019cj and observations of SN 2018jmt”and “Massive stars exploding in a He-rich circumstellar medium. XI. Diverse evolution of five Ibn SNe”have been successively published in the internationally authoritative journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Prof. Zhang Xiaohan's Research Team from the School of National Safety and Emergency Management Publishes Paper in Geomatics, Natural Hazards and Risk

A research team led by Prof. Zhang Xiaohan from the School of National Safety and Emergency Management has published a paper titled "Public Perception of Earthquake Events: Evidence from Social Media – A Case Study of the 2025 Dingri Earthquake”in Geomatics, Natural Hazards and Risk. The study takes the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that occurred on January 7, 2025, in Cuoguo Township, Dingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet, as a case study.

Ph.D. candidate Li Juntian from Center for Environmental Surfaces/Interfaces of School of Technology for Sustainability has published a research paper titled "Electronic cooperativity in MOF-confined single-atom alloys: A DFT-guided strategy for dual-functional catalysis towards simultaneous VOCs oxidation and CO resistance" in the high-impact environmental catalysis journal Applied Catalysis B: Environment and Energy, with Professor Ao Zhimin serving as the corresponding author.

BNU Zhuhai Welcomes International Students of Class of 2025

On September 14, 2025, the 2025 international freshmen from 29 countries arrived at the scenic Phoenix Valley, setting sail for their campus life at Phoenix School (PHS) at BNU Zhuhai. Students of BNU Zhuhai Join Volunteer Activity to Review Signage at Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Zhuhai Port

To support the smooth holding of the National Games, optimize the international language environment and build Zhuhai into an International city, a volunteer activity themed " Reviewing Signage for the National Games" was launched at Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Zhuhai Port on the afternoon of October 31, 2025. Organized by the Zhuhai Foreign Affairs Office, led by Dr. Xie Qingli, 19 students majoring in foreign languages from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education for the Future, formed a volunteer team together with staff from Zhuhai Foreign Affairs Office, contributing their professional strength to the language support work for the event.
