【Notice】Spark Salon (Session 7): A Ride Through Economic Globalization

Topic: A Ride Through Economic Globalization

Speaker: Pompeo DELLA POSTA, Belt and Road School, BNU

Time: 4:00-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2026

Venue: Li Shen Xuan, 2F

Abstract:

In this presentation the author proposes an overview of the process of economic globalization in human history. From its first signs—going back to the Etruscans, a population of central Italy who had been replicating the Greek artifacts—to Marco Polo’s Silk Road and the discovery of the New World. It will be argued, however, that those events could not qualify as “Economic Globalization” yet.

The different phases of the latter, starting from the Victorian Age, will be reviewed, together with the economic theories in favour of the opening of the economies to international trade. The role of protectionism in favouring the economic development of countries will also be discussed, together with the protests that have been accompanying the phase started at the beginning of the 1980s.

Finally, the current phase of “Slowbalization”, if not open “De-globalization” will be discussed, together with its possible way out: an internally and externally inclusive—what the author would call “Enlightened”—Economic Globalization.
