【Notice】Spark Salon (Session 6): Does the Universe Make Sense?

Topic: Does the Universe Make Sense?

Speaker: John Kelvin Webb,Faculty of Arts and Sciences, BNU

Time: Friday, April 17, 2026

Venue: Li Shen Xuan, 2F

Abstract: The universe appears to follow simple patterns, yet displays an extraordinary level of complexity. This raises a profound question: does the universe truly make sense, or is this an illusion created by the way we observe and describe it?

Traditionally, such questions have belonged to philosophy. But recent advances allow us to approach them in a new way. By analyzing light that has travelled across most of the observable universe, we can test whether the laws of nature are truly universal, or whether they change across space and time. If they do, then what we call the “laws of physics” may be only local features of a much richer and less familiar reality.

This lecture explores a significant shift in human understanding: questions once regarded as purely conceptual can now be addressed through observation and measurement. In doing so, we begin to bridge the gap between philosophical reflection and empirical science, opening a new perspective on the nature of physical law.

Speaker Bio: John Kelvin Webb is a British–Australian astrophysicist working on cosmology, spectroscopy, and fundamental physics. Educated at the University of Surrey and the University of Cambridge, he has held research positions in Europe, the UK, and Australia, and was Professor of Astronomy at the University of New South Wales for many years. He is currently a High-Level Talent Professor at Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai, and is affiliated with the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge.

His research combines observations of quasars and the intergalactic medium with the development of widely used analysis techniques, enabling precision tests of the laws of physics on cosmological scales. He has published over 240 scientific papers and received Australia’s Eureka Prize for Scientific Research. His work has been featured in The Economist, New Scientist, and major TV documentaries. In 2015, he co-organized a public event with Stephen Hawking at the Sydney Opera House, reaching over four million people globally.
